My Community Project by Chinmay Dabli

Michael, Maria, and Anna Sulzen set up this event known as the Brown Bag Ministry. When I arrived I actually felt really good about the amount of people I would be helping by giving them fresh food. As soon as I arrived there were people saying prayers. As the homeless people were listening to the prayers, a bunch of people including me started setting up the food. On the menu was chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, desserts, and the food I was serving was bread rolls. One by one, the homeless people started lining up to get a delicious meal. As they were served they said all types of friendly gestures such as “Bless you” and “Have a wonderful day”. I smiled when each of them thanked me. It felt extremely good to be able to do a thing as nice as this. I thought about the other days I had been kind. Helping out a boy who had been hit by a soccer ball, calming down a fellow student who was not confident about the EOGs, and helping someone achieve their full potential in sports. Those things meant a lot to me. They helped me feel good about myself. But this was different. Helping homeless people wasn’t something you do every day.

I was smiling after I left that day. Even though I was sweaty and hot, I was really feeling happy. I thank Maria, Michael, and Anna for giving me this unique experience.

I remembered one of Mother Teresa’s quotes that day-

“Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.”
