And How It Connects to What We Teach at Johnson’s Martial Arts
At Johnson’s Martial Arts, we often get asked, “Is this Karate?”It’s a great question—because while our students may wear uniforms and belts that look similar, what we teach is actually Traditional Taekwondo, not Karate.
Still, understanding what Karate is—and how it relates to our style—helps explain the deep roots and powerful techniques we teach every day.

What is Karate?
Karate (空手) is a Japanese martial art that means “empty hand.”It emphasizes powerful punches, kicks, blocks, and kata (forms), all developed for unarmed self-defense. Karate originated in Okinawa, Japan, and was shaped by both native and Chinese martial arts before becoming one of the world’s most widely practiced styles.
Karate teaches:
Striking techniques with hands, feet, elbows, and knees
Forms (kata) for focus, discipline, and technique
Sparring and self-defense rooted in tradition and efficiency
Character values such as respect, perseverance, and humility
It’s a complete and respected martial art—and one that has strongly influenced many other styles.
What We Teach: Traditional Taekwondo
At Johnson’s Martial Arts, we specialize in Traditional Taekwondo, a Korean martial art that also focuses on striking, forms, and personal development—but with unique roots and philosophies.
Taekwondo literally means “the way of the foot and fist.”It blends elements of:
Korean martial arts like Taekkyon and Subak
Karate, which was brought to Korea during the early 20th century
Modern self-defense and leadership training
In fact, early Taekwondo masters trained in Karate, and incorporated many of its techniques—before evolving them into something uniquely Korean. That’s why you’ll see similarities in forms, stances, and movements—but also important differences in mindset, flow, and application.
Why the Distinction Matters
We don’t call what we do “Karate,” because:
Our forms (poomsae) and techniques are drawn from Korean traditions
Our philosophy is rooted in Taekwondo values like courtesy, integrity, and indomitable spirit
Our curriculum goes beyond sport or competition—it’s about developing leaders through martial arts
We respect Karate and the arts it has influenced, but what we offer is something deeper: a blend of traditional martial wisdom and modern character training, all rooted in authentic Korean Taekwondo.
